Botanic Gardens Trust Sydney Australia

Overview

The Botanic Gardens Trust regrets that the 2010 Internship Program will not be running as scheduled in January 2010. We are currently in a period of change with staff and resources. We are committed to the Internship Program which runs for 7 weeks over the months of January and February each year. The program will return in January and February 2011.

If you wish to apply for the 2011 Internship Program applications will be accepted from September 2010.

The program

The Plant Science Internship Program is designed for students at the end of second or third year study, and recent graduates, in botany, ecology, forestry, environmental science, general biology (with plant interests), scientific horticulture and related subjects. The program will benefit those seeking professional or technical careers in plant sciences or conservation management.

Interns work full-time on a voluntary, unpaid basis, assisting scientific staff on herbarium programs and research. Interns receive extensive practical training in botany, plant conservation, collections management, and job-seeking in the scientific workforce.

Seminar and training sessions are led by professional scientists and technicians from the Department of Environment and Climate Change, other government departments and tertiary institutions, and cover theoretical and practical topics. Training complements and extends that given at university.

The program runs for seven weeks. Full-time participation for the full length of the program is required.

Interns will work mainly at the National Herbarium of NSW, located at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, with a five-day field trip to the Central Coast area of NSW.
