Role
To assist with research into, and cultivation of, selected Australian plants including the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis), Waratah (Telopea speciossima) and Flannel flower (Actinotus helianthi).
Research interests
- Growth of Wollemi Pine in response to environmental stresses such as drought and disease
- Initiating tissue cultures of new species of interest, such as Persoonia and Amborella spp.
Current work and research projects
- Propagation of the clonal collection of Wollemi Pine for the establishment of ex situ populations at Mount Tomah and Mount Annan Botanic Gardens
- Providing assistance in growth trials of the Wollemi Pine in response to water stress and varying light levels
- Maintaining stock tissue culture collections of several varieties of Flannel Flower
- Maintaining potted collections of selected Waratah hybrids for use in future research and breeding programs
- Overseeing the initiation of cultures of epiphytic orchids by volunteers (for eventual sale through the ‘Growing Friends’).
