Flora Friedmann Basketry workshop

Learn the technique of constructing a square grid base and build on from this to produce a delightful square basket. The grid base will be woven in natural and dyed cane and the basket walls will be made from natural or dyed bangalow palm inflorescence and/or coral pea vine. The grid is a versatile construction and can be woven into square, rectangular and circular forms and produces a very decorative effect. The traditional basketry techniques of weaving, twining (using two weavers) and waling (using three weavers) will be taught. All materials will be provided. There will be demonstrations, individual instruction and a comprehensive worksheet to take home. Read more about our new basketry tutor on the back page of the magazine.

Scientific Botanical Illustration class

with Lesley Elkan and Catherine Wardrop

As part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the Margaret Flockton Award, Lesley Elkan and Catherine Wardrop, Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust illustrators, will be conducting a two-day workshop in black and white scientific botanical illustration. With tuition on plant research and identification, pencil sketching, microscope dissections, scale and composition, students will then render their drawings with ink technique suitable for reproduction.

Ikebana and Ceramics demonstrations

Teachers of the Sogetsu Ikebana School will demonstrate the art of Japanese floral arrangement. Students of the celebrated ceramicist Mitsuo Shoji will demonstrate some of the techniques involved in creating ceramic vessels.

Helping Hands

Got a green thumb? Come along to Helping Hands and experience the work and care that goes into maintaining the Garden. Wear boots with ankle support and bring a hat, gloves, sunscreen and water.

Ikebana workshop

Sandra Marker, teacher of the modern Sogetsu School of Ikebana, will introduce you to the basic techniques of ikebana, the floral art of Japan. Sogetsu encourages artists to work with nature in an individual and imaginative form through colour, line and texture to create arrangements from the heart for all to enjoy.

Melinda Young Jewellery workshop

Join contemporary jewellery designer Melinda Young for a workshop exploring the beauty and wearable potential of natural materials. Students will learn how to create stunning and unique pieces of jewellery through a series of experimental exercises. Melinda will also teach participants about stringing and binding methods in jewellery making. See

Wanderlust Sydney workshop

Wanderlust is a yoga, lifestyle and entertainment event. The morning and afternoon feature yoga classes, lifestyle and meditation seminars, with entertainment in the evening from 4.30 pm. Beverly Allen Art Master Class

A four day botanical painting workshop for artists with some experience. With colour we will explore the light and shade, tone and form necessary to creat a three dimensional illusion on paper. We will analyse the layers of colour needed to depict a plant realistically, and learn techniques of colour mixing and application of washes. There will be an emphasis on the finer details that bring a painting to life and demonstrations of various techniques.

Barbara Duckworth Art Classes

Mount Annan is one of Sydney's best kept secrets for native plants. Among its collection are many spectacular specimens of eucalypts, wattles, grevilleas, bottlebrushes etc. Or choose your own subject matter!
