The Botanic Gardens Bicentenary 2016

Celebrating 195 years

On Monday 13 June Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden celebrated 195 years. Many families joined us for our birthday celebrations at our three Botanic Gardens.

  • The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney celebrations.
  • The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan celebrations
  • The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah celebrations.

It was on this day in 1816 that Governor Lachlan Macquarie pronounced the land on the edge of Farm Cove as Sydney’s Botanic Garden. As Australia’s first botanic garden, first scientific institution and first site used for agriculture, the Royal Botanic Garden has deep national significance.

This day commenced the countdown to our 200th birthday in 2016.

As we head towards our Bicentenary we want to know your thoughts and wishes for our Gardens for the next 200 years. Find out more on how to make your wish. Learn more.
