PlantBank is the ‘environmental insurance policy’ for Australia’s native plant species.
It is estimated that 50 per cent of the world’s plant species are under threat of extinction. In Australia over 10 per cent are already listed as endangered. In the same way that a bank safeguards our money, PlantBank will safeguard our plants from an uncertain future.
Located at the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan, PlantBank will be a world class centre for plant research and learning and home to the largest native seed bank in the Asia Pacific region.
A model of sustainable design and operation, PlantBank will house thermal efficient seed storage vaults, climate controlled glasshouses, state of the art laboratories, specialised teaching facilities and inspiring exhibition and conference spaces.
Work undertaken at PlantBank will contribute to the preservation of the world’s plant diversity and ecological habitats, bringing together our nation’s best scientists to collaborate on research projects of international importance. Its facilities will provide new and exciting opportunities to engage the public and local community in science.
Construction of PlantBank starts in January 2012. PlantBank will cost $19.78 million. Already $17.5 million has been raised through the support of the NSW Government, individuals and foundations. A further $2.5 million is still needed.

The loss of biodiversity, locally and globally, is so high and the impact on our future is so great, we must act now!
The Pyramid of Life, created by redeveloping the existing Pyramid and Arc, will be an inspirational learning hub in the centre of Sydney. Highly engaging and empowering exhibitions will inspire Sydneysiders and international visitors of all ages to live a more sustainable life and to help protect our environment in Australia and beyond.
Through face to face and distance interaction with guides, displays and interpretive signage, the Pyramid of Life will provide educational programs for schools and the public on biodiversity and sustainability. Remote communities will be able to engage with the exhibitions and programs using interactive learning facilities and new multi-media technologies that link to the ‘Connected Classroom Program’.
The Pyramid of Life will also house a theatrette, a climate controlled gallery, function areas and public amenities.
Construction of the Pyramid of Life is planned for 2013. The NSW Government has made a commitment of $16.743 million. A further $3 million is still needed.
