Vision for the future

The Botanic Gardens Bicentenary will help realise the Trust's vision of a world where people take enjoyment and nourishment from the beauty and life enhancing properties of plants and actively contribute to caring for our planet.

With this program we will be able to inspire the next generation to care for our planet and understand how vital plants are to our lives. We will have the resources to address the big issues of today; to further research into biodiversity and conservation; and to provide that special garden where we all come to relax, replenish ourselves and enjoy our community. Indeed the work behind the scenes in all its various activities is what gives us the capacity to shape the future.

Here at the Botanic Gardens, we are at the vanguard of protecting our biodiversity from threats of land use changes, climate change, invasive species, overexploitation and pollution. We are looking forward to our next 200 years and the leadership role we have to play. At the Gardens we are excited about these plans for our future.

Some of our plans are already underway thanks to generous support from the NSW Government, individuals and foundations but we currently need to raise $5.2 million for the two leading flagship projects. We invite you to be involved in the Bicentenary. Help us on this journey and share this exciting celebration and moment in Australian history. It is up to all of us to help care for our planet.

Bicentenary leadership

Message from the Chair, Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust

In planning for our bicentenary, our job is not only to protect and nourish a  much-loved institution but also to equip it for its leading role in protecting plant diversity in a world of growing environmental challenges.

In this way, we will build community connections, increase involvement and participation and provide active leadership to the people of Australia.

We’ve developed a range of projects covering science, sustainability, visitor experiences, garden displays, legacies for posterity, and memorable events in celebration of our 200th anniversary.

It is reassuring that with commitments from the NSW Government and various foundations and individuals, we have already reached 25% of our overall goal. Of course, we still have a considerable challenge ahead of us and we are seeking your support.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss our Bicentenary Campaign with you.

Trust, Trustees and Trust Committees

Message from the Chair, Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation

The Botanic Garden in Sydney is truly a national icon, part of our heritage - and the Bicentenary is a milestone to commemorate 200 years of history, research and education, and to connect with all visitors who use, love and enjoy the beauty of this Garden.

The projects in the Botanic Gardens Bicentenary program are inspirational and recognise our goals for the next 200 years. They will contribute to the development of our society and our environment long into the future. In 2016 there will be ceremonies and celebrations to embrace the nation.

We want Sydney, New South Wales and all of Australia to be part of this important milestone.

I warmly invite you to be part of this exciting time.

Our Board of Councillors

Message from the President, Friends of the Botanic Gardens

Big anniversaries are times for reflection and anticipation and this is the case for our Botanic Gardens Bicentenary as we celebrate past achievements and look to prepare the Gardens for many more anniversaries.

At a time when we have increasing pressures on our plant life and our communities are becoming more dissociated from nature, there is increasing need for projects in the Gardens focused on scientific research, conservation and community interaction.

The Friends of the Botanic Gardens calls on its members and the wider community to become part of the next stage of this journey through the Botanic Gardens Bicentenary program.
