Margaret Flockton Award

View details of Margaret Flockton Award 2012

The Margaret Flockton Award commemorates the enormous contribution made by Margaret Flockton (1861-1953) to early botanical illustration for taxonomic research, and it is unique in that it promotes botanical illustration, as opposed to botanical art.

The Friends of the Botanic Gardens is pleased to sponsor, with the support of the Maple-Brown Family, the Margaret Flockton Award for Botanical Illustration. Through its members, the Friends is committed to funding projects that embellish and enrich the four estates of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust. In supporting this Award, the Friends help the Trust and its staff to continue to pursue excellence in all that they do. The Friends also holds an annual exhibition of botanical art: Botanica, see Friends Events.

Judges

Judges’ Comments

Searching for the best balance of botanical accuracy, technical skill and artistic technique the judges had a difficult job selecting the highest place getters as the level of skill and precision was so high.

A broad assessment of all entries showed a lack of strictly accurate botanical information in some works, while others were scientifically accurate, yet lacking any artistic impact. In other illustrations an unnecessary level of detail was observed or an excess of stippling was not seen to add to the form, in some cases confusing the botanical information the artist was rendering. In all works, however, it was obvious where observation, skill and a passion for the process combined to create fascinating areas of detail, accuracy and beauty.

The styles of the winning group of works combine scientific accuracy with an exceptional level of illustrative skill. The illustrations are highly detailed and well informed, while still exhibiting restraint in the technique, allowing all the complex botanical structures to be clearly read and easily understood. A certain artistic flair and confidence imbues the works of these illustrators who are outstanding in their field.
