Rita Parkinson

Rita was born in the UK. She studied Fine Art at St Martins School of Art London, and Art history at the Courtaulds Institute, London University. Following graduation she specialised in illustration for children’s literature and educational publishing, including work in many books on natural history and science. Currently she lives in Melbourne and concentrates on botanical illustration. Her artwork focuses on the inherent architectural form present in all plant life. Gouache’ acrylics and black and white studies are her preferred mediums. Influences are varied and include Japanese art, contemporary realist art and traditional botanical art from the golden age of the 19th century.

Her paintings can be found in collections in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States. Rita received a Gold Medal from the R.H.S. London for a series of paintings of Agaves. In 2009 her painting of Cycas rumphii will tour the USA in the prestigious ‘Lost Paradise” exhibition, finishing at the Smithsonian Museum in 2010.
