Introducing David Howard, Head Gardener to HRH Prince of Wales, and Highgrove

David Howard

Highgrove Thyme Walk

Thyme Walk at 'Highgrove'

A rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s foremost experts on organic and sustainable horticulture.

Few gardens have evolved so dramatically in the last quarter of a century as that of Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, the private residence of HRH the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. It is arguably one of the most important gardens in Europe and a foremost working example of an organic garden: the whole ethos is to garden in as sustainable a way as possible, minimising inputs from outside and working with nature, not contradicting her laws.

With his broad experiences, from hedge laying to building dry stone walls, his vast knowledge of horticulture, his days of dealing with the public and his total commitment to organic practices, David Howard is the ideal steward for this most prestigious and influential garden. As Head Gardener to Prince Charles, David also travels to Scotland, advising on organic changes at Birkhall and to Clarence House in London.

David Howard's talks in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart

The Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, in conjunction with Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and the Australian Garden History Society Tasmanian Branch, are delighted to announce a private speaking tour by David Howard to Australia from November 7-16 2007. David will visit Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart. David will give a number of different talks that will captivate anyone interested in gardens – from the keen gardener who wants to understand the workings of the estate to the armchair traveller who prefers a guided tour of the remarkable Highgrove garden.

In his talk ‘Highgrove the Garden’, David offers a narrated on-screen tour of the garden throughout the seasons. This looks at the history of the development of the garden, including its ethos, art, architecture and plant material.

David’s second talk, ‘The Philosophy of Highgrove’, outlines the organic garden management as practised on the estate. Starting with the soil and its structure, this talk also covers good garden management and elements of re-cycling waste and tough woody material, making compost, staking and tying posts, hand tools, biological pest control and seed saving.

In his third talk, 'A Personal Insight: the workings and principles of the garden at Highgrove', David will share something of his own background including the journey that has led him to these prestigious gardens, as well as an overview of the workings of the Duchy Estate in Cornwall.
