Evergreen tree to 20 m high, deep rooting. Longevity more than 100 years.

Flowers: Creamy white, November.

Fruit: Dry capsule 4 – 7 cm long, splitting at maturity to release 8 – 18 seeds.

Seed: Yellow, lower surface covered with irritant hairs, May – June. Fresh seeds reportedly germinate without treatment.
