Tufted perennial grass to 0.5 m high with a long slender rhizome, with fibrous roots. Longevity 2 - 5 years.

Flowers: Spring. Wind pollinated.

Fruit: Dry, one – seeded indehiscent.

Seed: Locally dispersed. Germinates readily without treatment.
