Short lived tufted perennial herb with very short rhizome and fine fibrous roots to 3 cm; flowering stems compressed, usually 10-75 cm high and much shorter leaves. Variable species with several forms. Longevity 2 - 5 years.

Flowers: January to May.

Fruit: Biconvex nut.

Seed: Locally dispersed. Fresh seed dormant.
