Aquatic annual or perennial herb, often tufted with floating leaves to 5 cm diameter. Longevity 1 – 3 years, usually not stoloniferous.

Flowers: Yellow, November - March

Fruit: Capsule 5 – 8 mm long, submerged at maturity, December – March.

Seed: Black to 1 mm long, water dispersed.
