Tufted aquatic perennial or annual with submerged and floating leaves.

Flowers: White or coloured, November – January. Emergent above water.

Fruit: Indehiscent, 25 – 40 mm long, enclosed in a bladder-like sac containing numerous seeds. Withdraws into water as it matures.
