Perennial herb 1.5–10 cm high; rhizome short, vertical, roots fleshy.

Flowers: Magenta-tinged, November – March.

Fruit: More than 40 achenes per inflorescence, no pappus, mature October – May.

Seed: Achene 2.5 x 0.8  mm , locally dispersed. No dormancy with fresh seed.

Ecology

• Woodland habitat, on bare, open substrate.
• Rare in woodland at the Australian Botanic Garden.
• Tolerates mowing or slashing, which reduces crowding out by taller growing grasses.
• Seedlings noted after rain.

• Actively growing in winter (June 2006).
