Iridomyrmex purpureus

Iridomyrmex purpureus

Meat ants are common in the Woodland at Mount Annan Botanic Garden and build conspicuous mound nests. They are particularly active in warm weather.
They are general scavengers, feed on nectar, tend insects including aphids and scale insects for honeydew, and are occasional removers of seed.
