Margaret Flockton Award 2008The Margaret Flockton Award commemorates the contribution Margaret Flockton made to Australian scientific botanical art. The Friends of The Gardens, as a major fundraising organisation and supporter of the Botanic Gardens Trust, is pleased to sponsor the Margaret Flockton Award for Botanical Illustration. Through its members, The Friends is committed to funding projects that embellish and enrich the four estates of the Botanic Gardens Trust. In supporting this Award, the Friends helps the Trust and its staff to continue to pursue excellence in all that they do. The Friends also holds an annual exhibition of botanical art: Botanica, the Fruits of Our Labour - see Friends Special Events. 2008 Winners announcedThe winners of the 2008 Award were announced at the opening of Botanica, the Fruits of Our Labour on Thursday 3 April 2008. The works were judged on botanical accuracy and technical and artistic merit. First Prize of $5000: Lesley Elkan from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney for her illustration of Blechnum nudum. Lesley works as a Scientific Illustrator in the Science and Public Programs Branch. Lesley has received a second prize and highly commended awards previously. Highly commended: Lesley Elkan, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney: Pycnosorus pleiocephalus 2008 Judges' CommentsThe judges for 2008 award were Hendrik Kolenberg, curator of prints at the Art Gallery of NSW, Dr Pamela Bell OAM, art valuer, representing the Flockton Committee, Dr Barbara Briggs, former Deputy Director and Honorary Research Fellow at the Botanic Gardens Trust and Hannah Finlay, scientific illustrator from the University of NSW. The judges said that there were several outstanding artists among the entrants and the drawings submitted were all compelling in quality. They were delighted to see the generally high standard of work and that there were several submitted by international artists as well as others from many parts of Australia. The winning and highly commended illustrations were all highly accurate and very informative, showing a wide range of features of the plants; they all presented very good technical detail and excellent line work as well as outstanding composition. Each of the works by these artists is individually outstanding and choosing winners among them was most difficult. If some advice for the contributors is useful, the judges note that some works showed less consistently good and even line work, inconsistent styles of shading or excessive stippling that appeared to be included just to cover a space rather than to reveal texture or form. In some cases, stippling tended to obscure or confuse the images of the structures. In general, more satisfactory and clearer results were obtained by using one medium only, rather than a combination (such as ink with pencil), especially with a view to reproduction of the works.
