Library links - for all things botanical & horticultural |
Established in 1852, the Library of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney is the second oldest scientific library in Australia. It is the premier botanical and horticultural library in Australia, with a world-class collection of botanic, taxonomic and horticultural literature. There are small branch libraries at Mount Annan and Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens.and also a number of departmental working collections.
-
The Library supports the information needs of all staff of the Botanic Gardens Trust. The Library provides research and reference services to the scientific, botanical, horticultural and educational staff and to resident post-graduate students of the Botanic Gardens. Friends of The Gardens, volunteers and visiting researchers also make use the collections. People from outside the organisation who require access to specialised botanical or horticultural literature, including scientists, students, historians, horticulturists, may have access by appointment, but are asked to exhaust other sources before approaching this library.
-
Subject coverage includes: systematic botany, Australian & world floras, ethnobotany, aboriginal ethnobotany, plant pathology, plant ecology, plant molecular biology, evolution, biogeography, propagation, soil science, environmental science, horticulture, landscape architecture, botanical history, garden history.
- Formats include: books, journals, pamphlets, reprints & unpublished reports, manuscripts, rare books, indexed articles, theses, CDROMs, videos, photographs, portraits, slides, artworks, botanical illustrations, maps & plans, posters, microfiche/film, realia, working documents, archives. See Collections.
-
The Library collects resources that specifically support the work programs of all branches of the Botanic Gardens Trust. The collection complements the Herbarium, providing access to both published and unpublished materials necessary for botanical research. Materials acquired are at a level appropriate for research professionals and for qualified practitioners. We do not generally acquire undergraduate level materials or materials written for the home gardener.
- In recent years Library Projects have been greatly assisted by teams of Library volunteers and occasionally by work-experience students.
- The Library is undergoing a gradual transformation. We are reorganising and digitising heritage collections, improving facilities and refurbishing the Library. There is a long way to go. There are many ways to help the Library's progress. See Support the Library for more details.
- The Library has benefited enormously over the last few years through the donations of funds and resources. From a simple family photo of the Gardens or conservation work done on significant images or books, to the donation of a stunning collection of orchid books, a digital microfiche reader or a massive compactus. There are many ways the redevelopment of the Library can be assisted. How can you help? See Support the Library.
