Guidelines for Herbarium visitors

Entry policy guidelines for visitors to the National Herbarium of New South Wales.

Working hours are 9.00 am-4.30 pm, Monday-Friday, closed on public holidays. Use of the Library is to be arranged beforehand with the Library staff.

Research workers and other persons with bona fide reasons may use the herbarium by arrangement as approved by the Manager Plant Diversity. 

All visitors will be supervised by Herbarium staff.

Approval is subject to the worker complying with regulations of Herbarium protocol as outlined below:

  • Great care is to be taken when handling the specimens. Specimens are fragile and fragments may become detached.
  • Do not bend, place facedown or remove specimens from their folders.
  • Return specimens and folders to the boxes and in the order they were found.
  • Use permanent ink for annotations and determinations; see staff for the pens.
  • Use determinavit, confirmarvit or annotation labels: no writing directly onto sheets.
  • Annotated specimens are left with the relevant curator for data entry and filing by herbarium staff.

An identification tag with your name on it is issued on arrival and must be worn at all times in the building. Visitors must leave the building no later than 4.30 pm and leave their name tags with the Receptionist.
