Protecting plants for the future

The Botanic Gardens Trust is an important custodian of the world's plant diversity and an international centre of excellence in botanical research and conservation.

Protecting Plants for the Future has a national, regional and international focus reaching out to scientists and conservationists and engaging the wider community to further our work in botanical research and environmental sustainability.

Drawing on collections of living and preserved plants, held in the NSW Seedbank and NSW Herbarium, the Trust undertakes research on native flora, its conservation, rehabilitation and management to strengthen our position as a leader in plant science and to discover more about the impact of habitat loss and climate change.

The support of our sponsors makes an important contribution to the scope and reach of the Trusts conservation and research programs.

Principal Conservation Partner

We are delighted to welcome HSBC Bank Australia as our Principal Conservation Partner, the bank's largest environmental initiative in Australia to date.

The Principal Conservation Partnership supports three initiatives on an international, regional and local level: the NSW Seedbank, Asia Capacity Building Program and Towards Sustainable Horticulture.

The NSW Seedbank

The NSW Seedbank, managed by the Botanic Gardens Trust, is part of an international seedbanking network set up to insure against the extinction of the world’s threatened plant species.

The NSW Seedbank represents the largest collection of native seed and threatened species in Australia; it plays an important role in contributing to global targets for the preservation of species.

HSBC’s support provides funding to enable the collection of seed from vulnerable climate zones and the development of new research techniques to help conserve threatened plant species.

The NSW Seedbank currently holds 37% of NSW seedbearing plants or 2118 plant species. By June 2012 HSBC’s support will have enabled the conservation of an additional 60 plant species (approx) including threatened alpine and orchid species.

Asia Capacity Building

Regionally, HSBC will support the Trust’s contribution to the Asia Capacity Building program an initiative that will share expertise in Asia to help conserve the high biodiversity of the region.

The Asia Capacity Building program will include the launch of an International Certificate in Botanic Gardens Management in March 2010.

Towards Sustainable Horticulture

Towards Sustainable Horticulture is a program that demonstrates and advocates best practice horticulture improving the public’s understanding of water conservation, soil care and biological weed and pest management.

Projects funded through this program include water conservation initiatives and the HSBC What’s the Big Idea? Garden at Mount Annan. This innovative feature garden demonstrates conservation outcomes through the use of recycled materials and sustainable gardening techniques.
