Share the volunteer experience

Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens offers members a rich experience for those who want to be more involved. Volunteering is rewarding and fun. You can meet new people, learn new skills and help support the three Gardens.

Volunteers enable the Foundation & Friends to raise funds for special projects in the three Botanic Gardens, Herbarium and Domain. They cater for functions, assist Foundation & Friends administrative staff in the office, staff exhibitions, and promote membership of the Friends throughout the three Gardens. The Growing Friends propagate plants for regular and special plant sales.

What it means to us

Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens can only continue to promote, support and protect the three Gardens with the help of volunteer members.

Ways you can join in and help

A wide range of volunteer positions exist at the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah.

Catering	Caterers prepare and serve refreshements at many functions at all three Gardens
Committees	Foundation & Friends management committee and many sub-committees oversee the work of the Foundation & Friends
Exhibitions	Foundation & Friends volunteers assist with set up, display, hosting, as cashiers at all Foundation & Friends exhibitions
Events	Foundation & Friends volunteers oversee and run a variety of events, setting up equipment, introducing speakers, hosting attendees
Membership promotion	Foundation & Friends volunteers inform the public about the role of Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens and the benefits of membership
Office administration	Administrative assistance is given in reception, data entry, general office duties, packaging of items
Plant propagation and sales	Teams propagate plants at all three Gardens under the guidance of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust horticultural staff; Foundation & Friends volunteers arrange plant sales at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan and weekly plant sales in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
Trust promotion and education	Foundation & Friends volunteers inform the public through various organisations about the work of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust

How to get started

Send completed Foundation & Friends volunteer application form to Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens, Cottage 6, Mrs Macquaries Rd Sydney NSW 2000 or foundation.friends@rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au. Only members of the Foundation & Friends can be Foundation & Friends volunteers, so if you aren't already a member, join now.

Other volunteer positions

The Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust has a wide range of volunteer positions available. Recruitment for specific programs for other types of volunteers - scientific, nursery/horticulture and bush regeneration - occurs at different times of the year and any vacancies will be listed on this website as they arise. In the meantime we suggest you consider registering your interest with the Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens, who are always looking for helpers.
