Projects supported
Friends of The Gardens supports special projects that enhance the three Gardens, the Herbarium and the Domain.
Donations to the Friends play an important part in our fundraising.
Friends also raises funds for the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust through its Friends’ special events. It offers informative and enjoyable Friends’ activities, including talks, walks and workshops. These activities are supported by our Friends' volunteers.
Some of the projects financed by the Friends since its beginning in 1982 include
- research into the prehistoric Wollemi Pine
- creating the Rare and Endangered Species Garden at the Australian Botanic Garden
- renovation of Lion Gate Lodge, a popular venue for functions in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
- interpretive signage to increase your understanding of plants and birds at the three Gardens
- design of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust website
- a pedestrian bridge connecting the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden with the Mount Tomah Conservation Area
- scholarships, which enable horticultural staff to learn about best practices in botanic gardens elsewhere in Australia and overseas
- upgrading the playground at the Australian Botanic Garden
- creation of the Rare and Threatened Plants Garden at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
- construction of a boardwalk and viewing platform for visitors at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden
- the Royal Botanic Garden Herb Garden with its medicinal and culinary herbs
- the Margaret Flockton Award for scientific botanical illustration
