Helen FitzgeraldBorn into an artistic family in Sydney, Australia, Helen’s artistic career started quite early. She was nineteen when her first painting was accepted for the Wynne Art exhibition in Sydney. Helen taught senior art at Kambala School in Sydney in 1966-67 before going overseas to work and study for three years. Helen’s studies have included art, architecture, botany and languages at universities in Italy, Austria and Australia. Her strong interest in the preservation of Australian flora and fauna is reflected in her stunning botanical and zoological artworks. Helen’s hard work and talent culminated in 2002 with the award of a gold medal at the exhibition of the Royal Horticultural Society, London. Numerous exhibitions include 5 solo exhibitions at the Woodworks Gallery, Bungendore, 3 solo exhibitions at Cuppacumbalong Gallery, Canberra, Bega Regional gallery, Sydney and Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens group Exhibitions and the RHS, London. Her work hangs in private and corporate collections in Australia including Parliament House, Sydney. Also overseas collections, Helen has illustrated five books on Australian Flora and Fauna. Commissions include a large poster for Australian Parks and Wildlife on grassland species and for Australian Quarantine (AQUIS) for illustrations of imported plant pests and diseases. Aust, Artist, Artist’s Palette, ASBA magazine etc. have all published articles by Helen. Helen has taught at the Canberra School of Art, 1972-75 Applied Science, Canberra Univeristy 1981-1990, Botanical illustration since 1994 with Centre for Continuing Education at the Australian national University. She runs regular workshops at the Gungendore School of Arts as well as courses in Botanical Illustration at the Bungendore School of Arts and courses in Botanical illustration at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra.
