Nilavan AdamsI came to Australia in 1974 and worked in the Australian Public Service between 1978 and 2001. I started to paint as a hobby in 1978, mainly landscapes, portraiture and still life in oil, acrylics and pastels. After I left full time employment in 2001 to accompany my husband who was working overseas, I determined to experiment with watercolour by painting exotic flowers during long stays in hotels. I immediately fell in love with the medium. When I returned to Canberra, I enrolled in evening classes on watercolour techniques at the Australian National University’s School of Arts. By 2004, I had developed a passion for flower painting and decided to focus on botanical painting. My style has been to focus on the application of dry brush techniques which render finely detailed paintings that display velvety appearance. The love of plants, particularly flowers and those subjects with ‘attitudes’, has inspired me to produce fine botanical paintings and this has resulted in me receiving many awards and being invited to teach botanical art in many institutions in Canberra. I regularly exhibit in the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra Botanical Exhibition at the CSIRO, and at Botanica at the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. Samples of my work can be viewed at www.nilavanadams.blogspot.com.
