Sue Bartrop

Born into an art-loving family in Switzerland, Sue was exposed to exponents of the Northern Renaissance from an early age. Their masterful rendition of detail aroused her passionate interest, as did the intricacies of illuminated manuscripts.

Sue’s background in nursing and languages/linguistics was punctuated by regular visits to major and minor galleries in Europe. In Sydney, her artistic leanings at first found a creative outlet in hard-edge china painting. Mastering the layering technique while maintaining translucency became an absorbing challenge.
In 1998, the impact of two major botanical art exhibitions in Sydney, Shirley Sherwood’s Contemporary Botanical Artists and Ferdinand Bauer’s An Exquisite Eye, brought about a shift in direction and change of medium to watercolour. Under the guidance of inspiring and inspired teachers, botanical painting has since become a passionate pursuit. The botanically accurate, yet artistically sensitive, rendition of a plant specimen affords a way of celebrating the extraordinary in the ordinary. The act of layering light wash upon light wash, that slow ‘sculpting’ of the plant specimen, becomes a meditation in colour.

Sue’s work has been exhibited in Botanica at the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney from 2001 to 2006 and 2008 to 2012; the Botanical Art Society of Australia Annual Award exhibitions (BASA) 1999-2009; Parliament House in 2006; Canberra Botanical 2004, 2010-11; and the Fink Gallery.

She has won a number of awards for botanical painting from BASA and for china painting at the Royal Easter Show. Her works are hung in private collections in Australia, USA, France and Switzerland.
