Kauri ProjectA grand tree dies - but its beauty lives onIn 2007 a grand and beautiful Kauri Pine, Agathis moorei, died prematurely due to the roosting habits of the Grey-headed Flying-fox in the Royal Botanic Garden. Serious damage has been caused to many significant trees - 18 have been lost and more than 300 affected. The timber from the tree was distributed to carefully chosen artists and crafts people who have transformed it into memorable sculpture, furniture and other pieces. Proceeds of their sale are to fund the reinstatement of the Palm Grove and more Kauri Pines at the Royal Botanic Garden.
