Creative background and statement

My creative background stems back to the high school I attended, which had a strong art focus, and where I was lucky enough to have had access to extensive facilities covering a whole range of mediums at which time I dedicated my efforts to creative subjects. During school I had both my two and three unit major works short listed for Art Express, and my three unit work (ceramics) was exhibited in Art Express 1998 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

On completion of my schooling I travelled to England where I had the opportunity to work as an apprentice for five months with one of the leading furniture designer/ makers in the UK.

Upon my return to Australia I engaged in building and restoration work on a number of buildings and heritage items, including a sandstone church located near Goulburn, NSW, also the restoration of heritage listed stone steps in Hobart and the complete restoration of a King Billy pine clinker.

I then commenced and completed a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) degree at the University of Tasmania, in Hobart. This course, which included a major in furniture design, is where I conceived and adopted a style of design and workmanship that is very personal and reflective of my life. My life experiences provide the inspiration that drives my designs. I have worked with, and am confident in, the design and fabrication of furniture, objet and products crafted from all available varieties of timber, metals, glass and ceramics.
