'My custom designs incorporate appropriate use of individual timber species, good design, workmanship and finishing, aimed at producing valued items which have lasting appeal and satisfaction for my clients. I enjoy working with timber as a material, from the newly harvested log through to the finished item. The challenge is to bring out the best in the material.

I assisted in taking down this Kauri Tree at the Royal Botanic Garden and then transported and milled the logs. I reflected on the significance of this tree. At the time the tree was planted it was nearing the end of the great “age of sail” and, historically, kauri has played an important role for boat building among its many other uses, and so I decided to make a sailors chest to recall this time and tradition.'
