Four Sculpture Gardens for children at Mount Tomah Botanic Garden

Inspiring play nurtures a love of the environment

Significance of special gardens for children

Children are the future custodians of our planet. Their interest and ability to care for the environment and our planet will grow out of their love for the environment, gardens and plants in childhood. The issue of nurturing our planet is one of sustainability - economic, political, social and life itself.

Deep habits are developed in childhood. A pattern of visiting the botanic gardens in childhood will have lasting personal benefits through a lifetime. Gardens and gardening give pleasure; they nurture the soul; calm the spirit; bring communities together; and are a source of creativity and health. Plants are the source of life - they link to food, clothing, shelter, clean air - our survival depends on them.

A series of four themed children’s gardens, each with a sculpture and integrated landscaping, will be designed as fun and educational places for children to play at Mount Tomah Botanic Garden in the Blue Mountains.

This Garden is only possible with external funding. Although the NSW Government provides 60% of the Trust budget, support from the Foundation is critical to funding new acquisitions and programs that cannot be achieved through recurrent funding. The Botanic Gardens Trust plays a key role in sustaining the environment through maintaining plant conservation and diversity.

Key Features

Each sculpture will be selected from a design competition. The first will be announced May 2009.

The first of the children’s gardens will be called the ‘Garden for Laughing Children’. Its purpose will be to stimulate children’s natural curiosity and make learning fun. The theme for the Garden for Laughing Children is Exploring - getting close to nature - to nurture a love of nature in children and adults through their experience of interacting with the sculpture and the landscape it inhabits.

The magic setting of the Garden for Laughing Children at Mount Tomah Botanic Garden provides the perfect backdrop for children to play, have fun and learn to value the environment.
