Australasian Conference of Volunteer Guides in Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Australia’s oldest scientific institution, will host the 14th biennial Australasian Conference of Volunteer Guides in Botanic Gardens in Sydney, 21-25 September 2015.

  • Against the spectacular backdrop of Sydney Harbour, this conference will:
  • Highlight the extensive plant collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, and place the RBG Sydney in its historic context;
  • Discuss current botanical research;
  • Explore issues of climate change;
  • Provide opportunities for an exchange of ideas between volunteer guides in botanic gardens.

Our talks program will feature leaders in the fields of garden management, wildlife and current botanical research, and our guided walks and workshops will highlight botanical and cultural themes.

Exhibits on display during the conference will include specimens collected by Banks and Solander, and Bourke and Wills, as well as a First Edition of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, a 16th century De Materia medica by Dioscorides and other treasures.

The plenary sessions will be held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, which is located in the Domain, and is a short walk from the Botanic Garden.

There will be plenty of time to catch up with guides from other gardens.  Morning teas will be served at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Pavilion. Some lunches and afternoon teas will be served at Lion Gate Lodge, one of the lovely old sandstone cottages within the gardens. Our conference dinner will also be held at the Pavilion situated in the Domain and opposite the Art Gallery. On the last day we will have a farewell lunch in the Rose Garden of RBG Sydney.

Excursions will be offered to the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, site of PlantBank, or to the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah.  In addition, we are offering an optional post conference tour to the South Coast of NSW.

As part of the registration system, we have included a range of accommodation offering conference rates for our visitors.
