Genus: From Greek, eu, well and calyptos, covered referring to the cap which covers the developing flowers.
Species: From Latin, caesius, light grey, referring to the greyish appearance of the buds, fruit and stems.
Distribution
Only occurs in a restricted area in south Western Australia.
Native habitat
On a small number of granite outcrops.
Description
It grows to about 15 metres in height with pendulous branches.
Flowering/fruiting
Flowering is very conspicuous and occurs in winter and spring and is followed by large, silver urn-shaped gumnuts about 30 mm in diameter.
Location in Garden
Take the opportunity to see it in our Bisectae Eucalypt Arboretum on Cunningham Drive, just opposite the hoop sculpture.
Known in cultivation as ‘Silver Princess’ it prefers a dry summer and well-drained soils. The flowers are large (up to 50 mm in diameter) and normally pink to red but white flowered plants are known.
