Cycad is not a ‘Dinosaur Plant’A study led by Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust Research Scientist Dr Nathalie Nagalingum has shown conclusively that cycads as we know them today did not co-exist with dinosaurs, as is so commonly believed. The outcome of Nathalie's study will no doubt lead to the updating of the facts about cycads in textbooks, signage (even here at the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney) and in classrooms around the world. This kind of work and publicity about it show to the world the importance of work in botanic gardens, and locally highlight the clear differences between us and other kinds of gardens or parks in New South Wales. The paper 'Recent synchronous radiation of a living fossil' was published in the journal Science. For further information, see the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust media release in the Media Release Calendar under the title: Cycad is not a ‘Dinosaur Plant’ issued 21 October 2011. |
