2012 Artist in Residence Program at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount AnnanApplications are now open for the 2012 Artist in Residence program at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan. Sponsored by Interlink Roads, owner and operator of the M5 South West Motorway and E-Way, the program will assist in establishing the Garden as a place of contemporary art. Artists will have the chance to live and work amongst the natural surrounds of Australia’s largest botanic garden and create a sculpture that will become a feature within the Garden’s landscape. The selected artist will facilitate a number of community workshops in April and May, held in conjunction with the program, which is part of the Sydney Morning Herald Autumn of the Arts Festival. The 2011 Artist in Residence was Sydney-based sculptor, John Petrie who created the sculpture Bottlegrass. Unveiled in June, the sculpture has been crafted from stone, stainless steel, galvanized steel, steel plate, brass and chrome. The design of the sculpture was based on a synthesis of the forms and features of three Australian plants; Xanthorrhoea, the grass tree, Brachychiton rupestris, the bottle tree and Isolepis nodosa, knobby club grass. The chrome and brass balls will eventually turn grey and green as they react with the stainless steel and the environment. Download an application form here, or contact the Marketing and Visitor Services section at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan on 4637 7933. Applications close Friday 3 February 2012. |
