An update by our Nursery Horticulturist Stephen BartlettOn 10 November the Nursery staff anxiously harvested the tuber from our very famous flower 'Big Al' (Amorphophallus titanum). Experience from other institutions showed that tubers under 14-15kg usually die after flowering ('Big Al' was 9.4kg). Predicted flower size from a 9.4 kg tuber was initially around 90-100 cm high, so our expectations were well exceded when it finally reached 134cm!! We thought our flower, investing so much energy to put on a show for 16,000 visitors, would surely die, but the tuber weighed in at a healthy 7.8kg. Maybe it might flower again in another 2-3 years! |
