School holiday and other kids' activities

The three Gardens have a changing program of hands-on activities designed for children during the school holidays and over summer. Activities are fun for the whole family.

Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney 

Dandy Lions

When: During term-time Tuesdays 15 July to 16 September, Thursdays 17 July to 18 September, 10.30 am - 12.00 noon
Where: Lawn next to Victoria Gate Lodge, Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. Enter through Victoria Gate from Mrs Macquaries Road. Click here for map.
Cost: $135 per family for a term of Tuesdays or a term of Thursdays (max. 2 children, $50 per extra child). Casual places are also available each week $15 per family. Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens receive a 10% discount.

Jurassic jungle

Discover the world’s prehistoric plants. Go on a hunt through the Garden for ancient plants once eaten by dinosaurs. Create your own dinosaur-footprint fossil and make an edible chocolate version of the Wollemi pine bubble bark. Suitable for children 6-12 years.

Leafy critters

Discover the local plants used by Aboriginal people to make string and woven objects. Then twine, twist, knot and weave grasses and other plant materials to make your own leafy critter creation! Suitable for children 6–12 years.

When: Sat 11 October, 10.30 am, 11.30 am, 1 pm & 2 pm

Journey of the Seed 

How do plants grow? Pick up a map and activity kit from the Garden’s Visitor Centre and follow the self-guided trail to the Australian PlantBank. Enjoy fun activities along the way to discover the magical hidden world of seeds, complete the quiz and win a prize!

When: Available Monday to Friday 10 am to 4.30 pm
Where: The Garden’s Visitor Centre, the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan

Landscape Art Workshop series

Over a course of 8 weeks, students will develop skills in creating a landscape painting or drawing to produce a series of artworks in a range of mediums, including pencil, pastels, watercolour and acrylic paint. Drawing inspiration from the beautiful surrounds of the Australian Botanic Garden, students will learn about aspects of composition, perspective, colour and depth, whilst looking at the works of influential Australian artists. Students will work from their own sketches and photographs to produce a portfolio of paintings and multi-media artworks.

Suitable for children aged 8 to 13.

The 8 week course will be run by qualified art teacher Tina Wheatley from Mud Spot art studio.

When: Thursday afternoons from 23 October to 11 December, 4 pm to 5 pm

Mystery of the munchers

Collect your kit from the Visitor Centre, every day through spring, 9.30 am–5 pm. Explore the Garden to find the six mystery stops. It’s a wild world out there, and who is munching who? Enjoy fun hands-on activities and discover some amazing relationships between plants and animals.

When: Daily throughout spring, 9.30 am-5 pm

Wollemi Warrior Adventure

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Wollemi pine discovery during the Blue Mountains Festival of Walking! The villainous Iggy Chop is determined to destroy the famous Wollemi Pine and turn it into a toothpick for his collection. Our heroine, the determined Wendy Wanderer, sets out on a mission to save the Wollemi Pine from this terrible fate and expose Iggy Chop and his evil plan. With lots of fun and movement, this outdoor interactive performance is suitable for kids 3-12 years.
