Amanda Ahmed completed the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (Painting) at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University (1994), Bachelor of Letters (Hons) at the Centre of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, Monash University (2003), and Master of Fine Art by Research at Monash University (2011). The title of her MFA was Botanical illustration: drawing in the space of nature. She has studied botanical illustration with Dianne Emery and Mali Moir at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, and is presently studying with John Pastoriza-Piñol at the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
Amanda co-curated with Mali Moir The Eternal Order In Nature: the science of botanical illustration in 2011 to coincide with the XVIII International Botanical Congress in Melbourne. In 2012 she exhibited in the two exhibitions: Capturing Flora: 300 years of Australian botanical art held at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, and The Art of Botanical Illustration presented by the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne at Domain House Gallery, South Yarra.
