About the Foundation

What is the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation?

The Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation is a charitable Fund endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. All donations are tax deductible. The Foundation has an authority to fundraise from the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing under the Charitable Fundraising Act, 1991. It has GST Concession and Income Tax Exemption status. The ABN is 65 037 438 220.

The Foundation has four core streams of fundraising - funding Flagship Projects, Bequests, Endowment Fund, and the Foundation Fellowship program. The Fellowship Program, launched in December 2006, has a tiered structure to acknowledge all benefactors and their gifts. This facilitates regular annual donations.

The Foundation and Trust relationship

The Botanic Gardens Trust is the sole recipient of funds raised by the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation, Sydney. The Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust (Botanic Gardens Trust) is a statutory organisation created under an Act of Parliament in 1980. The Act states the objectives of the Trust are to maintain and improve the Trust lands, the National Herbarium of NSW and the collections of living and preserved plant life; to increase and disseminate knowledge with respect to the plant life of Australia, and of New South Wales in particular; and to encourage the use and enjoyment of the Trust lands by the public by promoting and increasing the educational, historical, cultural and recreational value of those lands. The Trust must give particular emphasis to encouraging and advancing the study of systematic botany to plant conservation. The mission of the Trust is to inspire the appreciation and conservation of plants.

It costs over $30 million a year to deliver the day-to-day essentials - to keep Sydney's Botanic Gardens safe and clean, in beautiful condition and bursting with life; to deliver internationally recognised scientific and conservation programs; and to run programs for the community. The NSW State Government funds 60% of this budget and the Trust runs commercial activities to meet the balance.

Through enhancing these facilities and programs, the Foundation is fulfilling its aim to conserve the world's plants for a sustainable future.

Why is a charity needed?

The Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation, Sydney was established in 1993 to raise funds to develop and enhance the botanic gardens and the programs (scientific, conservation and educational) administered by the Botanic Gardens Trust.

External support is critical to enhance the facilities and services provided by the Botanic Gardens for the community, to continue research in new fields of conservation, botany, horticulture and ecology. There are many ways in which the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation can assist the Trust to conserve what we have inherited from the past, to support what we are doing now, and create new opportunities for the future. Together we work to conserve the world's plants for a sustainable future.
