About the Jungle
Way back in 1912 the rainforest at Mount Tomah was under threat. Luckily, a group of concerned businessmen saved the day when they purchased 700 acres and opened a ‘conservation park’. Known as the ‘Jungle’, the park included tearooms and a number of tracks to features such as the ‘Temple of Nature’ - a grotto with sandstone pagodas, ferns and rainforest trees.
The Jungle was opened 23 March 1929 by the then Governor of New South Wales, Admiral Sir Dudley De Chair KCB, MVO. A plaque was set into a stone cairn to commemorate the occasion. Unfortunately, the Great Depression saw the business close in 1934 and the land was resumed. In 2008, with the generous support of John and Libby Fairfax, the Botanic Gardens Trust purchased the remaining 33 hectares of the Jungle, adjacent to Mount Tomah Botanic Garden.
The purchase of the Jungle provides a secure base for the future development of Mount Tomah Botanic Garden and ensures a block of temperate New South Wales rainforest for future generations.
Lady (Nancy) Fairfax Walk

The Lady (Nancy) Fairfax Walk was opened on 23 March 2009 by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO Governor of New South Wales and the Hon. Carmel Tebbutt, Deputy Premier, Minister for Climate Change and the Environment and Minister for Commerce. This special 10 hectare area of temperate rainforest has an accessible path through Coachwood and Sassafras rainforest. It was originally proposed in 1928 to be part of a Rainforest National Park and the bronze plaque that dates from the original opening on 23 March 1929 can be seen along the walk.
This walk through the Jungle is named in honour of Lady (Nancy) Fairfax AO, OBE in recognition of her philanthropic support for a range of community organisations in the ethics, health, aged care, volunteering, church and arts sectors.
