Navy takes over Sydney for freedom of entry

Freedom of Entry March through Sydney’s CBD by approximately 4,600 Royal Australian Navy personnel

When: Saturday, 14 March 2009, commencing at 9.00 am
Where: Parade will begin at The Rocks at 10.00 am and finish at Darling Harbour at 11.30 am.

A Navy spokesperson will be available for interview leading up to the event. Commander Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Nigel Coates, AM, RAN will be available for a media doorstop at 10.45 am near Town Hall, on the corner of George and Bathurst Streets.

The event will see one of the largest number of military personnel marching through the streets of Sydney since the end of World War II. The Royal Guard and RAN Band will also march.  The Queens Colour will be paraded before the Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC.

Key media opportunities for this event

9.00 am - Royal Australian Navy personnel muster in The Rocks.

9.15 am - The Royal Guard escorting the Queen’s Colour march into position

9.22 am - March in of the Queen’s Colour

9.30 am - The Governor-General, the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, arrives and is met by the Commander Australian Fleet. The Governor-General will be escorted to the Royal Guard for a Royal Salute, inspection of the Royal Guard, then presentation of the Gloucester Cup to the crew of HMAS Parramatta.

9.50 am - Commander Australian Fleet, will be challenged by the NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione. Fleet Command Warrant Officer will then present a scroll affirming their right to freely enter the City of Sydney.

10.00 am - Parade commences south along George Street.

10.25 am - Royal Guard (at head of parade) arrives at Town Hall. Salute will be taken by the Governor-General, accompanied by the Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Russ Crane, AM, CSM, RAN. Parade then proceeds along George Street, turning right into Liverpool Street.

10.45 am - Commander of Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Coates, will be available for a media doorstop on the corner of George and Bathurst Streets, near Town Hall.

10.40 am-11.15 am - Parade arrives at Liverpool and Susses Street for dispersal.
