A part of the communityOne of the most important things to us is how well our Gardens and the Herbarium are loved by the community We have an extraordinary history of volunteer involvement and the community feels a strong sense of ownership and protection over all of our properties and activities. Volunteers support us in all areas - over the past year, 600 volunteers contributed over 38,000 hours directly to Trust program areas or via the Friends of The Gardens.
Volunteers make a huge difference in areas as diverse as guiding, bush regeneration and science in the Herbarium. Friends’ works teams participate in catering, curating and managing art exhibitions, running talks, workshops and regular plant sales, and staffing information booths. The community (including our corporate supporters) not only contributes its valuable time, but also makes significant financial contributions. The Trust is very honoured to have the support of the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation, Friends of The Gardens, corporate sponsorship and the many individuals and families who value our mission and support us financially. Without this support, our past, present and future would look very different. Contributions received through the Friends of The Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation and directly to the Trust, have helped us create beautiful garden landscapes such as the Palace Rose Garden, acquire important equipment such as water tanks, add features like the Sydney Fernery, create life-enhancing programs like Youth Community Greening and give new life and uses to heritage buildings such as Rathborne Lodge. The Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation is a charitable organisation set up to raise money for the Botanic Gardens Trust to develop and enhance the Trust’s estates and programs and, in so doing, conserve the world’s plants for a sustainable future. The mission of the Friends of The Gardens is to promote enjoyment and understanding of the three Gardens and Domain as outstanding places for horticulture, science, recreation, the arts and education, and to support the Botanic Gardens Trust. The Friends is an independent membership organisation that is actively involved in fundraising and volunteering activities of the Trust. The Friends organisation also offers a range of membership activities, events and benefits and is a well-developed community in its own right. |
