Our ideas and inspirations

Each of our projects gives an answer to one or more of the questions: what kind of institution should the Botanic Gardens Trust be in 2016? How best do we lay the foundations for the future? And not to forget the part that Sydney loves best - how will we celebrate our bicentenary?

phases
The nine-year framework to realise our vision will be implemented in three phases.

Phase 1 Laying the Foundations has a heavy focus on larger capital projects in recognition of the sizeable budgets required and the time-intensive processes involved from fundraising, tender, design to building. These capital projects will transform landscapes and build big-vision sustainable infrastructure. At the same time, we will be laying the foundations for new directions in science research as well as refreshing our living collections through a program of collecting wild-sourced plants, seeds and DNA samples.

Phase 2 Building on the Foundations contains capital projects with shorter project timeframes, including treasures such as art in each of our Gardens that we know will become favourite features. Our scientific program will also be a particular focus as we strive to meet the increasingly urgent needs for research related to climate change and loss of plant diversity.

Phase 3 Celebrations and Commemorations will involve planning and implementing landmark scientific and cultural events. It will also see the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes work for this generation’s contributions towards posterity in the form of new art and heirloom publications. Throughout all phases, we’ll have projects with a strong focus on our educative mission for our knowledge and skills to take root in the broader community.

Some of our projects have discrete components. You’re invited to join us in our overall project vision or to focus on a component of a project that particularly takes hold of your imagination.

Many of our ideas are old friends - things we’ve all wanted or needed to do for a long time but never had the funding for. Others are based on arresting new visions for favourite precincts that will surprise and delight our regular visitors and encourage new visitors to return.
