Public viewing areas (managed access)

The Botanic Gardens Trust has two FREE public viewing areas available to general public on New Year's Eve. These two public viewing areas are managed access events offering catering and bar services. Security bag checking will be in operation at all access points. Please see below as restricted items will not be permitted.

Access to the Royal Botanic Gardens on New Year's Eve
On 31 December 2009 the Royal Botanic Gardens will be open from 7 am until 3 pm, with access only via Morshead Gate on the corner of Macquarie and Bent Streets. There will be no access to public viewing areas via the Gardens at anytime on 31 December. The Royal Botanic Gardens will close at 3 pm and all members of the public will be required to exit via Morshead Gate.

Mrs Macquaries Point

Mrs Macquaries Point offers unsurpassed panoramic views of Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and the city skyline. Access is via Art Gallery Road.

Disabled Parking  Limited disabled parking available for eligible permit holders is available on Art Gallery Road. For bookings please call 02-9231 8111 or www.131500.com.au. Bookings can be made until Friday 11 December 2008 unless sold out prior.

Alcohol  Licensed event, NO BYO alcohol. Bars open from 2 pm
Cash only, NO EFTPOS, credit card or ATM facilities on site
Food and Beverage 

Food will be available for sale (CASH ONLY).
Picnics are permitted - ensure no glass is brought on site and all beverages including plastic drink bottles are unopened (see below for restrictions). No EFTPOS, credit card or ATM facilities on site.

We ask you to remember the environment you are entering and consider the safety of other patrons. All patrons entering the site will be subject to security searches.
No BYO alcohol
No glass
No unsealed beverages, including water
No pets
No plastic sheeting/tarps
No tents, pegs or shade structures
No barbecues
No bicycles
No sharp or serrated knives
No bean bags, mattresses or inflatable furniture
No sparklers
No footballs or frisbees

What to bring

Radio (tune to 2DAY FM104.1 for NYE soundtrack)
Hat, sunscreen and suitable clothing for all weather conditions
New Year's Eve can be a long day waiting in anticipation for the spectacular City of Sydney fireworks. It's a good idea to bring some transportable forms of passive entertainment such as card games, particularly if you are bringing children on site.

Access  Site opens from 10 am on 31 December. 
Access via Art Gallery Road ONLY (there is no access to Mrs Macquaries Point from the Royal Botanic Gardens - see site map).
Waste  This is a Waste Wise event. Start the New Year with a favour to the environment and bring all your party props in reusable and recyclable packaging. Help us reduce waste, keep recycling streams uncontaminated and bin your butts!
Alcohol free zone A small free viewing area for those who do not consume alcohol will be provided at Mrs Macquaries Point. Alcohol will not be permitted inside this area, which will be patrolled by security. Once this viewing area is full, it will be closed.


Tarpeian Precinct - access via Macquarie Street

Tarpeian Precinct, adjacent to the Sydney Opera House, has stunning views of Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This location offers a fine vantage point for viewing the New Year's Eve fireworks display. Access is via Macquarie Street.
