Garden Memorial Wall

Media release: 1 August 2005

Preliminary work for the construction of the Garden Memorial Wall beside the Cahill Expressway and the Domain will begin this week.

'The view to the Royal Botanic Gardens from the Domain will soon be across an elegant garden wall rather than ten lanes of traffic' says Dr Tim Entwisle Executive Director of the Botanic Gardens Trust 'and the new botanical walk beside the Garden Wall will showcase the diversity of subtropical plants' he said. 'The theme designed by the Botanic Gardens Trust will include trees, shrubs and ground covers in a series of garden beds. Among the trees selected are Tulipwood, Lemon Scented Myrtle, Tuckeroo, Snow Wood and Queensland Maple.'

A feature of the Garden Memorial Wall will be the memorial announced by the Premier on 24 April which will commemorate Australian servicemen and women who have died overseas while on non-combatant duty.  It is being designed with the assistance of the NSW RSL.

'Drivers on the Cahill Expressway, one of Sydney’s major gateways have not been forgotten in the planning and design' Dr Entwisle said. 'Gymea lilies and the "Summer Red" eucalypt have been chosen for the eastern section where underground utilities permit wide garden beds and climbing figs reach up to the tree canopy for the remainder.'

The new wall will reduce traffic noise by 25% when the project is completed in 6 months.
