Hours & admissions

The Domain is open 24 hours a day every day of the year, and entry is free except for special or ticketed events.

The Royal Botanic Gardens is open every day of the year, except for any areas assigned for special or ticketed events. Entry is free, except there is an entry fee for the Tropical Centre (open daily 10 am to 4 pm - but please note that due to maintenance and other reasons, the Tropical Centre may occasionally be closed, so if you are planning a visit, please phone the Tropical Centre on 9231 8104).

Opening and closing hours

  • November-February: 7 am-8 pm
  • March & October: 7 am-6.30 pm
  • April & September: 7 am-6 pm
  • May & August: 7 am-5.30 pm
  • June & July: 7 am-5 pm

How to get here

Train: the nearest station is Martin Place. Other stations close to the Royal Botanic Gardens are St James and Circular Quay.

Ferry: an easy walk from Circular Quay

Bus: the 441 (Balmain via QVB Building) leaves York Street, Town Hall on weekdays, stopping outside the Art Gallery of NSW. The Sydney Explorer Bus also includes the Royal Botanic Gardens on its route and the 200 (Chatswood to Bondi, stops in Macquarie Street).

Car: there is metered parking along Mrs Macquaries Road, Hospital Road and Macquarie Street. Undercover parking is available at the Domain Car Park

Wheelchair hire: available at the Gardens Shop in the Palm Grove Centre.

Accessible paths: most areas of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain are wheelchair accessible, other than the steep paths and stairs. Accessible routes and toilets in the Gardens are signposted and shown on the map. There are two accessible routes linking the Domain to Woolloomooloo on the eastern side (one opposite the Woolloomooloo Gate,  the other on the southern side of the Art Gallery of NSW, both paths indicated by symbols on map).

Palm Grove Centre: located in the centre of the Royal Botanic Gardens, includes Gardens Shop, Visitor Information area, Botanic Gardens Restaurant & Cafe and Toilets

Visitor information: located in the Palm Grove Centre, open 9.30 am to 4.30 pm daily except Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Gardens Shop: located in the Palm Grove Centre, open 9.30 am to 5 pm daily except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Phone 9231 8125.

Guided walks:

  • For individuals or small family groups
  • Free guided walks daily at 10.30 am (except Public Holidays) - allow 1.5 hours
  • Free walks Mon-Fri at 1 pm (Mar-Nov only, except Public Holidays) - allow 1 hour
  • Walks depart from the Information Counter at the Palm Grove Centre
  • Organised groups : bookings essential, fees apply, phone 9231 8134

Scenic tour by Trackless Train: operates daily (weather permitting): Monday-Friday, 9.30 am-5 pm, Saturday-Sunday, 9.30 am-5 pm. Cost: adults $10, children $5.

Restaurants, cafes and kiosks

Gardens Restaurant closure

Please note that the Botanic Gardens Restaurant will be closed for roof repairs commencing Monday 25 May. The area around the building will be fenced off and scaffolding erected. Work is expected to be completed around the end of June 2009. The Restaurant will be closed during this time but the Cafe underneath will continue to operate. We apologise for any inconvenience.

  • Botanic Gardens Cafe: open 8.30 am-4.30 pm

Visitor code

Please walk on the grass! We also invite you to smell the roses, hug the trees, talk to the birds and picnic on the lawns.

Etiquette Please, no pets, bicycle riding, scooter riding, rollerblading, rollerskating, frisbees or ball games. These activities are allowed in the Domain only.
 
These beautiful Gardens are for everyone to enjoy - please don’t collect plants or flowers, climb on the trees, or walk on garden beds.
