Description
Mount Tomah is the cool-climate garden of the Botanic Gardens Trust. It covers 28 hectares on the summit of a basalt-capped peak 1000 metres above sea level in the rugged Blue Mountains. Since 1993 it has included 186 hectares of sandstone woodland and gullies to be maintained as a conservation area. Here, on rich basalt soil at an altitude of about 1000 metres, one of the world’s finest collections of cool-climate plants is being assembled. A special emphasis of the collection is on southern hemisphere cool-climate species, many of which have not previously been grown in Australia.
The Garden also contains a representative collection of rhododendron species and hybrids, conifers, a large rock garden, a formal garden, a herb garden and a forest viewing platform. Of special interest is the Plant Explorers Walk.
