The following lessons are the most popular sessions at Mount Tomah Botanic Garden. However, if your topic is not here, please phone the Education Officer to discuss your ideas.

Plant adaptations

Science and Geography students investigate the special features of plants that help them survive in environments ranging from the rocky heights of the Himalayas, the North American woodlands, the plains of South Africa and rainforests of the South America.

Geography of Mount Tomah

Visit Mount Tomah and take your students on a world wide tour of global environments including the Himalayas, Eurasia, South Africa, South America and North America. International biodiversity at your fingertips! This lesson relates to 'Global Environments' from the Stage Four Geography Syllabus. Students explore physical characteristics and biotic processes of ecosystems such as alpine and  rainforests. Geomorphological process of plate tectonics, weathering and erosion, topography as well as atmospheric processes can be studied.

Geology of Mount Tomah

Mount Tomah Botanic Garden provides a unique opportunity for Science students to examine and compare geology of sandstone, shale and basalt areas. The vegetation change and human use due to the different soils derived from these rocks can be observed all at the one site.

Plants for Senior Science

The majority of the course work required for the topic 'Plants' can be covered in a single day excursion. Students have a unique opportunity to examine propagation techniques of the specialist nursery at Mount Tomah Botanic Garden. The conservation, propagation and marketing of the Wollemi Pine will be discussed with students.

*Local Ecosystem

Mount Tomah Botanic Garden's conservation area has incredible diversity with over 600 species of plants growing in a range of environments. This land looks over the World Heritage Wollemi Wilderness and is closed to the public unless accompanied by an education officer. Compare species of rainforest plants with those from eucalypt woodlands and examine both biotic and abiotic factors in these natural environments.

*Evolution of Australian Biota

Senior Biology students investigate adaptations of Australian plants for pollination, seed dispersal and a range of environmental conditions including fire, arid and low nutrient soils. Evolution is bought to life with numerous living examples of flora from throughout our Gondwanan past.

*Denotes sessions that can be designed for either two hours or for the whole day.
