Australian Infants and Primary StudentsMount Tomah Botanic Garden is a beautiful, unique excursion venue, nestled in the spectacular Blue Mountains World Heritage area. School studies come to life as teachers and students participate in syllabus linked, planned learning experiences. Contact the Education Officer to discuss your ideas. Some lessons on offer include: Get Growing - beginners and advancedStudents plant their own seeds and seedlings, identifying the needs of living things. We work with students to encourage the development of horticultural skills and a love of plants and gardening. By observing plants in a natural environment and collecting a range of seeds, leaves and other plant parts, knowledge about plants and their importance in our world is increased. (HSIE, S&T) Everyone needs a homeExplore the Garden, looking for creatures and plants that live within it. Comparisons between natural and built environments are encouraged. Scientific method is fostered, and skills are extended by the use of scientific equipment such as magnifying glasses. Part of the lesson looks at some plants that Aboriginal people have used. (HSIE, S&T) State and National ParksMount Tomah Botanic Garden is surrounded by the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. How do we look after it? What is World Heritage?' (HSIE) Wild and wacky plantsExplore the mysterious world of the Bog Garden. Weird carnivorous pitcher plants, venus fly traps and sundews live in this very special environment, where every insect is at risk of becoming dinner. Learn about their very different way of life. (S&T) RainforestsStudents experience a temperate rainforest environment and learn about the plants and animals that live there. Comparisons with other very different growing environments are readily available within a healthy walking distance. (HSIE, S&T) Reduce, re-use and recycleVisit the magnificent worm farm in the Garden’s composting unit – which is a marvel of sustainability.
