Water Restrictions at the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain 2005

The Botanic Gardens Trust is a leader in sustainable horticulture practices and strives for responsible water use by:

  • Watering only 20% of lawns in the Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens
  • Applying mulch to garden beds and around trees
  • Incorporating water-holding crystals and wetting agents into the soil.

To ensure the health and vigour of Sydney’s beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain during the drought, the Trust has been granted Category 3 Special Exemption on water-use restrictions. This allows:

  • Automated turf irrigation two days per week between 1 am and 4 am. Sporting fields in the Domain are the only turf areas watered
  • Use of sprinkler systems on garden beds from 6 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 8 pm
  • Use of hand-held hoses with trigger-controlled nozzles.
