Bach at The Calyx - Melissa Farrow & Simon Martyn-Ellis

Bach at the Calyx is a series of four free and interactive Sunday afternoon classical music concerts. The perfect pairing of J.S. Bach and other masterworks in the verdant surrounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Join us every second Sunday in May, June, July, and August to explore a world of musical treasures and floral blooms starring artists from Australia's leading classical ensembles.
These matinee concerts are family friendly and have a 40 minute running time.

Melissa Farrow (traverso flute)
Based in Sydney, Australia Melissa has a very active and fulfilling career as a period flautist, recorder player, and teacher in the Australian early music scene. She has been Principal flute of The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra (ABO) since 2003, and a core member of the Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) since its formation. In late 2019 she joined four other colleagues from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, to form Notos Wind Quintet, Australia's premier historical woodwind quintet.

Melissa performs and records regularly with Pinchgut Opera in the Orchestra of the Antipodes and has performed with many groups including Ironwood, Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), Latitude 37, The Marais Project, The Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, Luduvico’s Band and Sinfonia Australis.

Simon Martyn-Ellis (lute/theorbo)
Simon Martyn-Ellis began playing the lute after finding the classical guitar repertoire too restrictive for ensemble performance: continuo collaborations remain a mainstay of his activities.

Simon returned to Australia in August 2019 after 17 years abroad, having lived and worked in first Germany for a decade, and then the United States. Intensely grateful for his experiences, he looks immensely forward to working with past, present and future colleagues from home and around the globe. You can hear him working within Pinchgut Opera, Latitude 37, the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Van Diemen’s Band, ARCO, Salut! Baroque, Ensemble Galante, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Duo Corbetta, along with other small but special collaborations.
