Presented by Marijke Gilchrist
Marijke is experienced across a range of painting mediums, collage and silk dying techniques and combines all this with encaustic medium. After a one day introduction to encaustic in January 2013, Marijke fell in 'love' with the medium and through extensive experimentation in her studio she has made the medium her own which has led to numerous encaustic exhibitions since 2014.
Inspired by the Australian outback, and dramatic seascapes, in this exhibition the artist has used a medium, called encaustic which involves fusing layers upon layers of beeswax mixed with natural resin and pigment with a high heat source. This medium provides the viewer with a truly sensory experience. The multiple layers gives works a luminous, ethereal quality, which retain the beautiful aroma of beeswax. These works can be safely touched, to feel the texture involved (from the smooth wax, to roughness of incorporated materials) and are waterproof.
